A thriving community where everyone belongs

The City of Melton is located in the outer western fringe of metropolitan Melbourne and consists of 31 suburbs. Spanning approximately 530 square kilometres, bordered by Djerrwarrh Creek and the Wombat State Forest, the City of Melton is a combination of urban and rural living.

Our population

The official City of Melton total population is 164,984 (as at January 2019). Figures from the Bureau of Statistics show that in 2017/2018, the City of Melton had the fifth largest, and third fastest, population growth rate in Victoria and is growing at 5.4 per cent.

Our growth

The City of Melton will continue to experience rapid and substantial growth for the next 35 years and will see an increase in cultural and linguistic diversity.

Our community

Ours is a young municipality with over 70 per cent of residents aged under 45 years. It’s also extremely diverse and is made up of groups that speak over 80 languages and represent 70 countries.

The City of Melton provides a vast resource of talented labour, educational, training and leisure facilities, and is an excellent and affordable place to live and do business.

Our vibrancy

With a rapidly growing population and a vibrant local economy, the City of Melton is ideally situated for its proximity to the Melbourne CBD, airports, ports, rail system and major highways and freeways.

In 2018, the City of Melton was named the fastest growing economy for over a decade, with an almost 70 per cent rise in Gross Regional Product between 2007—2016.

We currently have 10 approved Precinct Structure Plans (PSPs) that guide the development in key residential and industrial areas within the municipality, with a further 11 PSPs still to be developed, five of which include major employment precincts. Each PSP allows for the development of areas for future employment, with several offering significant employment opportunities.
